Where and when do bed bugs hide?

Bed bugs enter your home through luggage, used couches and beds, on clothing, and other materials, usually undetected. Since they have flattened bodies, it’s not impossible for them to enter into tiny spaces as small as the width of a credit card. They love to hide in places like box springs, mattresses, headboards, and bed frames – these places give them easy access to bite people during the night time.

Since bed bugs tend are likely to be active during the night, they tend to bite when you’re sleeping. Bed bugs bites are painless in the beginning, but later on, they will turn into itchy, red marks. Victims often feel helpless as bed bugs repeatedly feed on them every night.

bed bug treatment

To prevent bedbugs from disturbing and disrupting your life, first and foremost, you need to ensure your home is properly cleaned on a regular basis.

In Toronto, bed bug heat treatment is the most effective way to eradicate this pest from your home, but there are other steps you might try first.

Here are some other tips for dealing with bed bugs in your home:

  • Be sure that your bedding, curtains, and all linens are cleaned. Use hot water and allow them to dry under the heat of the sun if possible.
  • Scrub mattresses using a stiff brush to remove the bed bugs together with their eggs before you vacuum it.
  • Wrap the mattress along with the box spring using a zippered cover to prevent bed bugs from escaping and entering. Make sure that you encase the mattress for at least a year — bed bugs can live this long even without feeding.
  • Repair and fix the cracks in adhesive and glue peeling wallpaper, if any, to prevent bed bugs from hiding in these places.
  • Get rid of unused items and mess around your bed.

These steps for bed bug treatment may help you to get rid of bed bugs and keep them away from you when you sleep. What about in the rest of your home?

Tips to prevent bed bugs

  • Ensure it’s actually bed bugs in your home — not ticks, fleas, or any other insects. Different pests require different kinds of pest control. Bed bug treatment and bed bug extermination are for bed bugs only and sometimes not applicable to other insects.
  • Clean up any clutter to minimize hiding places.
  • Wash and dry-heat your blankets, bedspreads, bedsheets, and any clothes that regularly touch the floor.
  • Kill bed bugs using heat — carefully!
  • Keep others out of your home until the bed bugs have been dealt with — don’t let the bed bugs transfer to others!
  • Vacuuming can be used to remove some bed bugs, but heat is the best treatment.

bed bug extermination

Cleaning the infested areas may help you control the increasing number of bed bugs. But to get rid of bedbugs, sometimes chemicals are necessary – which you need to be very careful with. It’s always wise to hire a professional pest control company for a bed bug exterminator in Toronto. Certain bed bug treatments can be harmful to your health if they’re not administered correctly — make sure only to use products that are safe in bedrooms. Do not use any chemicals on your bedding and mattresses if there are no labels that say it’s safe for linens.

bed bug life cycle

EGGS – Just like many other creatures, the life of a bed bug begins with an egg. A female bed bug lays 1-5 eggs per day and can lay up to 500 eggs in one lifetime. These eggs have a milky white appearance.

NYMPHS – Nymphs is another word for young bed bugs. Before reaching the maturity stage, a bed bug usually molts 5 times. Even though nymphs are similar to adult bed bugs in appearance, they are quite a bit smaller and not yet sexually mature. Young nymphs are yellow-white, while nymphs that are older are reddish-brown. To complete the molting stage, nymphs need blood from an animal or human.

ADULTS – Just like the color of older nymphs, adult bed bugs also appear reddish-brown. Adult bed bugs usually feed weekly.

Type of bed bugs

Cimex Lectularius – This is the most common type of bed bug to find in your home. These bed bugs can adjust quickly to a human environment and usually live in a calm and moderate climate.

Cimex Adjunctus – These are also known as bat bugs and they are usually seen in tropical regions. This kind of bed bug feeds on bats, but sometimes they do feed on human hosts.

Cimex Hemipterus – Also known as tropical bed bugs, these feed on human beings but in tropical regions.

Haematosiphon Inodora – These are also known as barn swallow bugs. They usually feed on cliff swallows and their habitat is in swallow nests.

Make sure that you properly identify the type of bed bugs you’re dealing with before performing any bed bug treatment, pest control, and bed bug extermination. Not only will incorrect methods be ineffective, but they could also be harmful to your health.
